Why Organic Foods Are Important For Health

Ask yourself this: Would you dip vegetables you were preparing for a salad in poison? Would you pump a little extra trans fat into the hamburger meat you’re about to grill? If not, why are you paying someone to do it for you? Organic foods don’t use chemical pesticides or herbicides. They use natural methods of weed and insect control such as mulching, composting, tilling and (believe it or not) lots and lots of ladybugs! Animals raised on organic farms are not injected with hormones and are fed a GMO free diet that itself is organic. They also have access to the outdoors, insuring a healthier animal and thus healthier meat, milk and eggs.

The chemicals many non-organic farms spray on their produce may not be safe for human consumption. The FDA and EPA cannot be fully counted on here. Many of the 600 active chemicals registered for agricultural use in America were approved by the EPA before extensive diet testing. As for pesticide residue, the FDA only tests a meager one percent.

Why Organic Foods Are Important For HealthAs a result of crop rotation and naturally managed and nourished soil, organically grown foods have more vitamins, minerals and enzymes making them more nutritious. Organically grown foods are chock full of vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus. Worried about how they taste? Healthy, strong plants result in a product that is richer in flavor. Even the smell and texture improves.

Always keep this in mind. When you eat meat, you eat everything that went into the animal’s body as well. The hormones, antibiotics and other drugs non-organic farms inject into their livestock may not be so healthy for you. And, no, cooking the meat will not burn it out. Animals that are fed meat byproducts (Keep in mind that cows are meant to be strict herbivores.) are laden with all the toxins and chemicals that animal consumed. In humans, growth hormones and unneeded antibiotics can lead to early onset puberty, heightened risk of cancer, tumors and genetic problems.

Organic food is especially important for children and expectant mothers. A child who turns their nose up at mushy canned asparagus or rubbery canned peaches may love the fresher, crisper varieties. A woman who’s eating for two has to be mindful of every single thing that goes into her body, including what exactly is in the food she eats. Children fed organic diets have very low levels of metabolites in their bodies due to not consuming anything sprayed with pesticides. Organic food is significantly high in omega-3 fatty acids, the good fat that encourages the absorption of nutrients that a growing body needs. No fewer than three separate studies have shown that children born to women who ate organic while pregnant have higher IQs than their peers. Children fed an organic diet are overall healthier with less of a tendency to asthma, ADD and childhood obesity.

Anyone looking to improve their health may want to consider an all organic diet. If you have a little one to feed, you may want to seriously consider organic for them as well.
